One Terminal. 22 Ways to Wait.
L003: One Terminal. 22 Ways to Wait.
No two passengers use an airport in quite the same way.
Some want to work. Some want to switch off. Families and groups need space to stay together, while individual travellers may simply want somewhere comfortable to sit and charge their devices.
At Hong Kong International Airport’s Terminal 2 Expansion, that thinking has translated into 22 bespoke seating configurations across four floors of the terminal.
The project features 1,961 fully powered Zoeftig Vista seats, but the interesting part of the story isn’t simply the number of seats. It’s the variety of environments that can be created from one modular seating platform.
Collaborative bench units, single-sided benches and large node configurations provide different ways to use the terminal space, while two distinctly different finish specifications – Type A and Type B – incorporate solid-surface and Formica table options.
The majority of seating is finished in a bespoke HKIA blue, with dedicated PRM seating differentiated in orange and further identified through integrated PRM logos.
Vista was specifically selected for its high levels of durability and modular reconfigurability, allowing a common seating system to accommodate a wide variety of layouts without requiring completely different products throughout the terminal.
Delivering that flexibility at this scale also presented a significant challenge.
Hong Kong was one of the first major live projects for Vista, combining short lead times with high volumes and an extensive number of configurations. For our teams, it provided an early opportunity to demonstrate exactly what the platform had been designed to do.
For Zoeftig, modularity isn’t about creating different configurations simply because we can. It’s about giving airports and designers greater freedom to shape seating around the individual requirements of a space, while retaining the durability and consistency of a single product platform.
One terminal. One seating system. 22 different ways to use it.
