Skarfabakki Cruise Terminal, Reykjavíc, Iceland
Skarfabakki’s new passenger cruise terminal is creating a purpose-built gateway for the growing number of cruise passengers arriving in Reykjavík.
Developed by Faxaflóahafnir, the new 5,500m², two-storey terminal has been designed to improve facilities for both transit and turnaround cruise passengers, while supporting the port’s ambition to increase the number of visitors beginning or ending their cruise journey in Iceland. Outside the main cruise season, the building has also been designed to operate as a multi-purpose venue for events and gatherings.
For the passenger waiting areas, Zoeftig supplied 450 inFINITE seats, creating a robust and distinctive seating environment suited to the demands of a busy international cruise terminal.
The installation utilises moulded z-form PU seats and backs across a carefully selected palette of Citrus, Grey and Ocean Grey, contrasted against the black structural components. The combination brings colour into the terminal while retaining a consistent visual language across the different waiting areas.
Integrated Charge Plus power modules provide passengers with convenient access to charging while they wait – particularly relevant within a terminal serving turnaround passengers who may be transitioning between cruise ships, flights, and onward travel.
The project represents an important development for Reykjavík’s cruise infrastructure. Faxaflóahafnir reports that approximately 300,000 cruise passengers have passed through its ports annually in recent years, with an increasing focus on turnaround passengers who spend longer in Iceland as part of their journey.
For Zoeftig, Skarfabakki demonstrates how inFINITE can combine durability, integrated technology, and a strong visual identity within a high-volume passenger environment – creating seating designed to perform while becoming part of the architectural character of Iceland’s newest passenger terminal.
